PLATE CALCULATOR

Load the bar for any weight — or add up the plates to find the total.

Per side

2 × 45 lb

Total on the bar: 225 lb = 45 lb bar + 180 lb in plates.

How the plate calculator works

It works two ways. In By target weight mode, enter the total you want on the bar — the bar is included — and it subtracts the bar, splits the rest across the two sleeves, and loads the heaviest plates first so you carry and spin the fewest plates possible. In By plates mode, tap the plates you've loaded on one side and it adds everything up to show the total weight on the bar.

Standard bar & plate weights

Most barbell math starts from these reference weights:

  • Olympic bar — 45 lb (20 kg)
  • Women's Olympic bar — 35 lb (15 kg)
  • Technique / training bar — 15 lb (10 kg)
  • Plates (lb) — 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, 2.5 (plus 55, 15 & 1.25 competition plates in the builder)
  • Plates (kg) — 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25

From the rack to your program

Knowing how to load the bar is step one; knowing what to load is the program. Cornerstone Strength prescribes your working weights from your tracked maxes, so each set already shows the right number — and this calculator tells you how to build it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does a barbell weigh?+

A standard Olympic barbell weighs 45 lb (20 kg). Women's Olympic bars weigh 35 lb (15 kg), and shorter technique bars are often 15 lb (10 kg). The bar is part of your total — this calculator subtracts it before working out the plates.

How do I find out how much weight is on the bar?+

Switch to the 'By plates' mode, tap the plates you've loaded on one side, and the calculator adds them up — doubling the per-side total and adding the bar — to show the full weight on the barbell.

What plates do I need to load 225 lb?+

On a standard 45 lb bar, 225 lb means 90 lb per side — that's two 45 lb plates on each side. The calculator shows the exact breakdown for any target weight.

Do I load the same plates on both sides?+

Yes. Barbell loads are symmetrical, so every plate shown is loaded once on each side. The 'per side' figure is what you stack on one sleeve, then mirror on the other.

What plate weights does this support?+

Standard pounds: 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, 2.5 lb, plus 55, 15 and 1.25 lb competition plates in the bar builder. Kilograms: 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25 kg. Plates are colour-coded to match real calibrated plates.

Why can't it hit my exact target?+

If the remaining weight per side is smaller than your smallest plate, the exact total isn't loadable. The calculator shows the closest weight you can reach and how far short it is so you can adjust.
